Case Study

Sugar Cane Yield Improvement

A large sugar cane producer in Mexico observed a 30% production gap in their fields from two different locations in two areas: 75 T/ha in Colima and 107 T/ha in Quitana Roo. The low yield created significant problems within their factories. The producer wanted to evaluate their management practices and correlate soil biodiversity with the influence on crop yield.

The Solution

The producer completed a BeCrop® Test to identify the biological parameters to reduce the production gap and tested 5% of the sugar cane soil surfaces in the two areas.

BeCrop Test indicated biodiversity and nutrient cycling potential metrics were positively correlated with yield in all locations. More intensive management and agrochemical applications could explain its low biodiversity and nutrient cycling potential, and thus its low historical yields.

Results

The producer used the microbiome information to improve their management strategies, reducing costs and increasing yield at the low-producing locations, and gain a huge advantage from BeCrop® Test with ROI: +923%.
