Management Practices

Herb Young at Squeeze Citrus, a small-acreage citrus grower in Thomasville GA, started his operations 2 years ago after working 38 years in the synthetic pesticide industry, where he helped design research programs and launch products. In 2021, he decided to transform his land by using living mulch on first-year citrus (8 species cover crop) and wanted to understand the effects of his management practices on microbial nutrition.

The Solution

Herb Young completed BeCrop® Tests to analyze the soil in his replicated trial of 135 trees. The test was split into three treatments: conventional, transition, and regenerative. He collected two sets of samples to understand how his cover cropping strategies were beneficial to his microbe nutrition. The first samples were collected before transplanting in March 2021. The second samples were collected 7 months after the transplanting in October 2021. BeCrop® provided a soil microbiome analysis based on DNA information indicating biodiversity and functionality were higher in the areas with regenerative treatment. There was a high level of Auxin production, Cytokinin production, and Gibberellin production. Also, there was a high level of stress adaption with high Salt tolerance, Abscisic acid, and Heavy metal solubilization.

Results

BeCrop® Test Reports showed that Herb's regenerative treatments doubled the microbial species and increased the total quantity of fungal soil biology 6x more than the conventional treatment. BeCrop® enabled Herb Young to measure the effectiveness of the regenerative practices in his orchard operations at Squeeze Citrus.
