Case Study

Yield Improvement

Large olive oil producers located in Portugal wanted to understand the relationship between yield and the potential for microbial nutrient mobilization linked to the current fertilization strategy in historically high, medium, and low-yielding olive orchards.

The Solution

The producer conducted a BeCrop® Test to analyze 9 parcels with 3 different types according to historical yield (High, Medium, and Low). A positive correlation was observed between crop yield and nutrient availability and mobilization. The high yield parcels showed lower biodiversity, however, their microbial communities displayed better adaptation to environmental conditions and a lower abundance of disease-causing pathogens.

Results

Preserving the microbial communities that mobilize nutrients towards plant-available forms can be positive for increasing crop yields. The company will use this information to focus its fertilization strategy on higher nutrient availability and microbial mobilization and thus increase yields and revenue.
