Finding a pathogen in the soil can identify a potential disease risk. But its presence alone does not always explain what is happening in the field.
In a vineyard in Spain affected by black foot disease, the pathogen associated with the disease was detected at comparable levels across the vineyard. Yet the vines showed very different outcomes: symptoms were concentrated in the northern sections, while the southern sections remained symptom-free.

The Challenge
The vineyard presented an important crop protection question: If the pathogen associated with black foot disease was present at comparable levels across the vineyard, why were vines showing symptoms in the north but not in the south?
Looking at pathogen presence alone could not fully explain the difference.
What BeCrop® Revealed
BeCrop Technology provided a broader view of the microbial communities surrounding the pathogen.
The analysis revealed a notable difference between the two areas: the symptom-free southern sections had substantially higher levels of Trichoderma, a group of beneficial fungi associated with biological disease suppression.
Plant material was also analyzed. In the symptomatic northern area, the black foot pathogen was more abundant inside the plants, while the same pattern was not observed in plants from the south.
Looking Beyond Pathogen Presence
The findings provided biological context for something that pathogen detection alone could not fully explain.
Both areas had comparable levels of the pathogen in the soil, but they did not have the same microbial environment. The higher abundance of Trichoderma in the symptom-free southern area pointed to a stronger presence of microorganisms associated with natural disease suppression.
This distinction is important for crop protection. Knowing that a pathogen is present tells us about a potential threat. Understanding the biological community surrounding that pathogen can provide additional context around that risk.

Disease development depends on more than the presence of a pathogen. The plant, environmental conditions, and surrounding biology all contribute to what ultimately happens in the field.

In this vineyard, looking at the broader microbiome revealed an important difference between areas experiencing symptoms and areas that remained symptom-free.
